Sam Kerr Named NWSL Player of the Week
Sam Kerr of the Chicago Red Stars has been named NWSL Player of the Week following her hat-trick performance versus Sky Blue FC. The award is selected each week of the regular season by the NWSL Media Association, a collection of writers that cover the league on a consistent basis.
NWSL Soccer News: Chicago Red Stars forward Sam Kerr has received NWSL Player of the Week honors, as voted by the NWSL Media Association. Kerr’s performance was highlighted by her passing the 50-goal mark in the NWSL – the first player in league history to accomplish the feat.
During Chicago’s second game of the week, Kerr recorded a hat-trick (scoring goal number 49, 50, and 51 in her NWSL career) to lead the Red Stars to a 3-1 victory over Sky Blue FC. With the three-goal performance, Kerr became the first NWSL player to score three career hat-tricks, all of which happened at Yurcak Field. Kerr’s hat-trick versus her former club also gave her the league lead in goals this season (8).
Kerr and the Red Stars went 1-1-0 in Week 15, falling to the league-leading North Carolina Courage on Wednesday and then bouncing back to edge Sky Blue on Saturday. In the two matches, Kerr combined for 16 shots, four key passes and three goals. Her standout performance came against Sky Blue, where she finished with 10 shots (six on target) and connected three key passes on 58 touches.
It is the sixth time Kerr has been honored as the NWSL Player of the Week and the thirteenth time a member of Red Stars has won the award.
The Chicago Red Stars will return to action Saturday, July 14, at 8 p.m. ET against Seattle Reign FC at Toyota Park in Chicago.
