WPSL GAME RECAPS:
Thursday’s (7/6) home match at Amelia Earhart Park in Hialeah saw the Surge top Treasure Coast Dynamites from Port St Lucie by a score of 4-1.
The first half saw Nicole Baldassini (NJIT) get a brace in the 9th and 20th minutes, assisted by Aline Dalmedico from Brazil.
East Carolina Alum Chrissy Gratz also picked up two goals with scores in the 15th and 80th minutes off assists by April Perry, an FIU alum and FAU’s Sammy Lujan.
TCD’s Shandor Wilkinson snuck one in in the 61st minute to spoil American University GK Morgan Lang’s shut out.
Also on the game roster providing valuable minutes were Flor & Sol Baldassini, Iris Dunn, Mimi Godoy (FAU), Tuany Miguel, Nicole Rafols and Karina Radice. The Surge chose TCD’s Acacia Nelson as Player of the game while Christina Chang (FAU Alum) took the honor for the home squad.
Saturday’s (7/8) road trip to Winter Park, with a limited squad due to injuries from Thursday’s game, was an even match-up between two very talented squads. Thunderstorms shook the area pre-game but the skies cleared for the match at Trinity Prep with only a light rain starting in the last 5 minutes.
Recent WKU grad Dunn picked up a goal in the 35th minute off a beautiful feed by Dalmedico which turned out to be the only score of the night. Lang earned the shut out with the stellar defense of UCF’s Bridget Callahan, Chang, Perry, and Rafols (Barry). Midfield was controlled by Miguel (Brazil), the other Baldassini sisters Flor (Stetson) and Sol (Georgia College) and Dalmedico. Dunn was at forward with local St Thomas Aquinas High School standout and future South Carolina commit Morgan Armstrong. Chang was again awarded POG honors with Surge picking Krush’s Khadija Shaw.
Coaches Ramiro Vengoechea and Eddie Hernandez were pleased with the performance of the team and praised their efforts.
