How to Peak Your Soccer Performance and Minimize The Risk of Injury
Did you ever think your athletic potential could be influenced by your posture — or that good posture could unlock your potential? The professionals know this — Simply put, soccer players have less power if they have poor posture. Just look at the pictures of the athletes and then look at the example of poor posture. It makes sense that the alignment of your body is the basis of proper movement. Read what our expert John Gallucci Jr. — the MLS Medical Coordinator — has to say on the topic. I wonder if he has to tell the pros to stand up straight once in a while.
Youth Soccer News: John Gallucci Jr. is the MLS Medical Coordinator and the former Head Trainer of the New York Red Bulls MLS team and a Sports Medicine consultant for professional athletes in the NHL, NFL, NBA, MLB, and USA Wrestling. Gallucci, Jr. is also President of JAG Physical Therapy & JAG Pediatric Therapy.
Here is Gallucci Jr.’s advice on Proper Posture – Just look at the professional soccer players! Do you see Ronaldo and Clint Dempsey slouching?
Proper posture is a major factor when it comes to preventing injuries on and off the field. Poor posture places increased stress on the body which leads to compensatory patterns and eventually injury due to fatigue.
Our mom’s weren’t wrong when they told us “sit up straight” and “don’t slouch”.
When the body is working in an anatomically correct position all muscles, bones, ligaments and tendons are synergistically working in the most efficient way in turn decreasing energy expenditure, stress and fatigue.
What most people don’t realize is that proper posture begins with your core, which includes your abdominal, lower back and upper hip region. The core muscles act as the main stabilizer during standing and sitting. If your core isn’t strong enough to support your body you will find yourself in a compensatory pattern, such as slouching.
To combat a weak core try adding simple core strengthening exercises, such as planks, into your workout regimen.
For greater power and flexibility on the field, a youth soccer player’s good posture is plus. Not sure if your posture is good enough? Stand up and flex your gluten. See if your pelvis tilts … Proper alignment allows for greater efficiency of movement. Now that you know that to reach your peak performance on the field an athlete’s posture must be correct — we expect a lot of you to be saying thank you to your moms.
